Welcome to KPFP.ORG's Newsletter, Issue #8
Summer is over and with Fall comes the busy month of October hosting
Red Ribbon Week (Oct. 17-25), National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month, Character Education Week (Oct. 18-24), National Learn & Serve Challenge Kick Off Week (October 5-12), National Bullying Prevention Awarenss Week October 4-10, all campaigns those of us in Prevention are concerned with.
So what is the Kings Partnership for Prevention to do to recognize all of these important campaigns?? We hold our annual Prevention Recognition Event and honor all prevention programs in Kings County.
This year’s event will be a breakfast held at one of our newest partner’s facility, Kings County YMCA. Laura Martin, Executive Director has opened the doors to the Partnership, while Karen Gomez Barrera, Executive Director of the Corcoran Family YMCA will rally her staff to prepare the breakfast.
This year’s theme is “Remember When…”, and will feature a media presentation which takes an entertaining look at the history of prevention. A Keynote speaker will be featured along the same theme and the awards, music, and camaraderie will make this a Wednesday morning in 2009 to remember!
Please join us for this community event. Two tickets per program, per organization are provided complimentary. Additional seats are $5 per person and may be purchased at the door. Kings County YMCA is located at 1010 W. Grangeville, Hanford, CA 93230.

National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week, Oct 4-10, 2009
The Fourth Annual National Bullying Prevention Awareness Week, Oct 4-10, 2009, encourages communities nationwide to work together to increase awareness of the prevalence and impact of bullying on all children. Every day, more than 160,000 children nationwide stay home from school to avoid bullying. Up to one-third of the nation's students are bullied during the academic year, and more than 60 percent witness bullying daily. The results of bullying can be devastating -- or even tragic.
Bullying Resources:
CDE has information available on our "Bullying and Hate Motivated Behavior" Web site. This Web site provides resources on how to identify and discuss bullying and how to differentiate between physical and psychological aggression, why bullies bully, bullying and the law, and how bullying can be prevented or diminished. There is a link to sample policies and frequently asked questions. You also can download and print copies of the “Bullying at School” document.
Listed below are links to a few web sites that contain information for parents and professionals. It is in no way an endorsement of the Web sites - they are just a few of many resources.

Getting Results - Update 4: Violence Prevention and Safe Schools consists of comprehensive discussions of the research on bullying, peer aggression, sexual harassment, and preventing other forms of violence. Chapter 2 of this document provides an in-depth look at the research related to bullying. The publication can be downloaded.

CHARACTER COUNTS! Week October 18-24, 2009
CHARACTER COUNTS! improves the lives of the
adults who teach it — and the communities that
embrace it. CHARACTER COUNTS! gives kids a
framework for ethical living. Simply put, we help
kids make better choices to make everyone’s
life better.
CHARACTER COUNTS! is two things: an
educational framework for teaching universal
values and a national coalition of organizations
that support each other. The result is a culture
change in your school or youth-service program.
CHARACTER COUNTS! is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nonsectarian. It transcends cultural
differences. It isn’t a curriculum, an add-on, an out of-the-box program, or a quick-fix fad. It’s character
education that works with your needs and preexisting
programs. Just have a look inside and see
how easy it is to understand ― and begin.

Fresno Pacific's 2-Day Training: Why Try Program
Fresno Pacific University is offering a two-day training called: "WhyTry Program" on Monday, October 5, 2009 and Tuesday, October 6, 2009 from 8:30 - 3:30. To register visit the WhyTry Program website. (www.whytry.org)
The WhyTry Program is a simple, hands-on curriculum which helps youth overcome their challenges and improve outcomes in the areas of truancy, behavior, and academics.
WhyTry teaches critical social and emotional principles to youth (K-12) using a series of ten pictures (visual analogies) which each teach a principal, such as resisting peer-pressure, or that decisions have consequences. The visual components are then reinforced by music and physical activities. The major learning styles—visual, auditory, and body-kinesthetic—are all addressed.
The WhyTry Program is now in use in over 5,000 schools, mental health facilities, and correctional facilities in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK. It has now been demonstrated in a variety of research settings to reduce truancy, improve academic success, and increase graduation rates.
WhyTry in Schools
WhyTry in High Schools
WhyTry in Middle and Junior High Schools
WhyTry in Elementary Schools
WhyTry in Corrections
WhyTry is used in both youth and adult corrections throughout the United States. WhyTry is used in correctional education as a curriculum to provide life skills and transition support. It is also used in inmate-run groups because of its ease of facilitation and its impact.
WhyTry has been used in probation as a tool officers can use reinforce the social and emotional skills that allow offenders to succeed outside of the institution.

Ban on candy flavored cigarettes takes effect
As of today, tobacco companies will no longer be able to produce candy and fruit flavored cigarettes!
While several provisions of the law authorizing the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate tobacco products have already taken effect, this is one of the most significant. Thanks to the effort of thousands of advocates like you, Congress passed this legislation, the president signed it into law and kids are now protected from the lure of products like Camel’s Twista Lime, Kauai Kolada, Margarita Mixer, Warm Winter Toffee and Winter Mocha Mint to name just a few.
Of course, there will be a lot of news coverage on this and Big Tobacco will be operating at full speed to get their talking points in every newspaper in the country. So, how about we give them a run for their money?
TAKE ACTION: Write a brief letter to the editor of your local newspaper. We will provide you talking points and deliver the letter electronically for you. This is a great day for America’s kids and what better way to celebrate than by spreading the word with a letter to the editor today.

Landmark Investment in Prevention: HHS Announces Stimulus Prevention and Wellness Fund
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act’s (ARRA) Prevention and Wellness Fund. The initiative, entitled Communities Putting Prevention to Work, will create healthier communities across the nation through innovative and proven approaches that address physical activity, nutrition, obesity, and tobacco use.
The dedication of these funds represents a “historic and long overdue investment in communities that will achieve long-term, lasting improvements in physical activity, nutrition, weight, and tobacco cessation” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius; it is also the culmination of a national movement for prevention that many of you a played a part in. We commend every one who worked to advocate that prevention belonged in ARRA. As an organization whose mission is directly tied to the advancement of prevention, this is an incredible opportunity and success.
Prevention advocates must now work together to ensure that these dollars have the greatest impact possible. By investing in quality prevention that promotes equitable health and safety outcomes, community engagement, and multi-sector collaboration, and emphasizing broad-scale, sustainable change, funded communities and those of us who support their efforts hold the keys to success.
--- --- ---
Please FORWARD this alert to others interested in primary prevention and encourage them to JOIN THE NETWORK so they too can be informed as new prevention-related resources are released.

Congressional Recess Guide: Opportunities to Weigh in on Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities
As you are likely aware, the full House, as well as the Senate Appropriations Committee have voted to eliminate the State Grants portion of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) program. Although Congress is currently in recess, there is still time to weigh in with the members of your congressional delegation, as most of them will be spending extended periods of time in their home state and district offices. During this time, it is critical that your members hear from you about the importance of restoring funds to this program.
To that end, CADCA has developed a recess guide, designed to help you maximize your opportunities to weigh in with your congressional delegation; either by setting up appointments to meet directly with your members of Congress, or working with your local government to introduce a resolution in support of restoring funding to the State Grants portion of the SDFSC program, and presenting it to your federal representatives.
Please click here to access the guide: Congressional Recess Guide: Opportunities to Weigh in on Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities.
