Welcome to KPFP.ORG's Newsletter, Issue #6

kings partnership for preventionKings Partnership for Prevention is transforming.  We have just received notice from the State that they recognize us as a non-profit!.  We are still awaiting the Federal response, but have no doubt it will mirror the State’s decision.  Although the Coalition has been active for about 6 years now, it will continue to mature and develop and, there will be the growing pains of a new 501c3. I want to thank everyone for their input during this process.  The ultimate result will be that of a Coalition that truly represents its members.

At the April annual meeting, the Coalition voted to reduce the Coalition committees to just two; Governance and Program.  The first Program committee meeting in May, quickly proved this was not an effective model for KPFP as we couldn't make it through all the varied topics in 90 minutes.  So the committee decided to propose three committees, Education and Community Outreach, Policy and Law Enforcement, and the Social Marketing Committee. These committees are the current, operating committees listed in the by-laws.

Each member of the coalition is asked to pick a committee they are most interested in and join.  The Program committee will be dissolved in about a month, once we have chair people for these three committees. Are you interested in stepping up?  Let Karen or myself know.

Moving on to the Governance Committee, it has served its purpose well.  The individuals who have taken the time to attend have spent hours pouring over the by-laws, researching non-profits and designing what they think will keep the Coalition running smoothly while allowing the voice of the Coalition members to be heard and count.  It is the goal of our Coalition officers that the board represents the active coalition members and that we do not get bogged down on isolated interests or agendas.

We have been talking since December about the “12 Community Sectors” we need represented on our coalition in order to be eligible to apply for the 2010 SAMHSA grant. Representatives from these sectors have been contacted and recruited.  I have asked repeatedly at Coalition Meetings for recommendations for these positions. We want individuals who are active in the coalition and know what we are about.  These individuals are committed to serve, and will be appointed at the next general meeting.

Having said all this, remember; by-laws are dynamic documents.  Things can change, By-laws are not set in stone.  If something isn’t working, a recommendation for a by-law revision can be made.

If you have any questions about all of these changes, the Coalition in general, or want more information about any of the committees, do not hesitate to contact me.

Meeting dates have been difficult to post in advance, as structure changes have affected meeting times and locations.  Here is the plan, as much as is developed for the remainder of the year.  We will fill in the blanks as they develop.

character counts weekCHARACTER COUNTS! Week October 18-24, 2009

CHARACTER COUNTS! improves the lives of the
adults who teach it — and the communities that embrace it. CHARACTER COUNTS! gives kids a framework for ethical living. Simply put, we help kids make better choices to make everyone’s life better.

CHARACTER COUNTS! is two things: an
educational framework for teaching universal
values and a national coalition of organizations
that support each other. The result is a culture
change in your school or youth-service program.

CHARACTER COUNTS! is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and nonsectarian. It transcends cultural differences. It isn’t a curriculum, an add-on, an out of-the-box program, or a quick-fix fad. It’s character
education that works with your needs and preexisting programs. Just have a look inside and see
how easy it is to understand ― and begin.

Congressional Recess Guide: Opportunities to Weigh in on Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities

As you are likely aware, the full House, as well as the Senate Appropriations Committee have voted to eliminate the State Grants portion of the Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) program. Although Congress is currently in recess, there is still time to weigh in with the members of your congressional delegation, as most of them will be spending extended periods of time in their home state and district offices. During this time, it is critical that your members hear from you about the importance of restoring funds to this program.

To that end, CADCA has developed a recess guide, designed to help you maximize your opportunities to weigh in with your congressional delegation; either by setting up appointments to meet directly with your members of Congress, or working with your local government to introduce a resolution in support of restoring funding to the State Grants portion of the SDFSC program, and presenting it to your federal representatives.

Please click here to access the guide: Congressional Recess Guide: Opportunities to Weigh in on Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities.

Hidden DrugsA New Resource Shows Parents Where to Look for Drugs in Their Homes

A print version of “Danger Zones” House Tour is now available FREE of Charge, No Ordering Limits.

When parents think about keeping their teens safe from drugs, they don’t usually think of drugs that could be found IN their homes. But today’s teens are abusing prescription drugs more than any illicit drug except marijuana.

Teens, who often get prescription drugs from relatives or friends, overwhelmingly report that they didn’t think these drugs were as dangerous as illicit drugs so they felt safe trying them. And many teens abuse over-the-counter (OTC) medications and inhalants because they are inexpensive, widely available, and legal.

Your organization can take advantage of this NEW Media Campaign resource to help educate parents about Rx drug danger zones in the home, customizing it with a simple label across the bottom.

Quantity copies are available, FREE of charge, by visiting www.TheAntiDrug.com or by calling 1-800-788-2800 and requesting House Tour Print Insert: Where Are Drugs in Your House? [ONDCP09-FCINSERT].

Movie Smoking Scorecard Campaign Launchsmoking in movies

The American Medical Association Alliance, L.A. County Department of Public Health, and the California Youth Advocacy Network will be launching a summer long campaign to raise awareness about tobacco use in this summer’s youth-rated films.

Join the Movie Smoking Scorecard campaign to document which studios will produce the most youth-rated films with tobacco imagery this summer. This summer's campaign will include:

  • A scorecard that regularly tallies the number of tobacco impressions in this summer’s youth-rated films.

  • A public Facebook page that hosts the scorecard, a petition, Twitter feed and video messages from youth to the studios voicing their concern about tobacco use in youth-rated films.

  • A letter-writing and petition drive.

  • A strategically placed billboard located near – and naming – the studio with the worst summer record at the end of September.

Activities for California Teens:

In addition to the Movie Smoking Scorecard campaign, CYAN will be launching a youth-focused e-advocacy campaign called, Summer Movie Takeover. The purpose of this campaign is to provide a forum for teens to address the problem of tobacco use in this summer’s youth-rated films. Our advocacy efforts will be based around California’s Chain Reaction facebook page. Check out the page to see what you can do this summer and to see the latest videos from Youth Quest.

Together we can reduce the amount of smoking shown in youth-rated films. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Strach at (916) 339-3424 x.21 or karen@cyanonline.org.
