Welcome to KPFP.ORG's Newsletter, Issue #16

donate to KPFPKings Partnership for Prevention received its 501c-3 status in October of 2009. We are funded in part by Kings County Behavioral Health and we recently received a small grant from the Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council of Kings County for a specific project.

The coalition is in need of funds to keep our media outreach projects in place. This includes this newsletter, presented monthly to our list of supporters and our website, www.kpfp.org. Our website has been in operation a little over a year and provides news, a calendar, and resources for the community. We are linked to 211 and other valuable partner sites across the County.

If your organization, or if you as an individual can help support the Coalition, it will be great appreciated. In this time of economic downturn, many services to community members have been lost. KPFP does not want their newsletter and website to be one more lost service!

Contributions of any amount can be mailed to:
Kings Partnership For Prevention
450 Kings County Drive, Suite 104,
Hanford, CA 93230

You can also visit our website at www.kpfp.org to use PayPal.

Thank you in advance for your donation and supporting the mission of Kings Partnership for Prevention.

Community PreventionMANAGING INDUSTRY DONATIONS: A PRIMER AND DISCUSSION ON HOW PLANNING AND ORGANIZATIONAL POLICY DEVELOPMENT CAN HELP.

Like all organizations that provide social services, AOD prevention providers are living in an environment of scarce resources and shrinking budgets. Many organizations providing substance abuse prevention services find themselves in a dilemma when deciding to accept or solicit support from a donor whose business or affiliations are (or can be perceived to be) in conflict with the organization's mission. Take for example the common practice of soliciting donations from wineries, especially in the many wine growing regions of California. The decision to accept or not accept funds/donations/sponsorships from this type of company does not come easily, there are many considerations. CARS has prepared a Prevention Tactic that addresses this issue and offers a practical guide to establishing guidelines and policy to address this common fundraising dilemma.

EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS, A NEW PARADIGM FOR SELECTING PREVENTION STRATEGIES.

What was the last prevention intervention you implemented? Think back to how that particular program or practice was selected in the first place. "I was just told this is what we would implement." "A neighboring county was doing it and it looked interesting." "The Executive Director heard about it at a conference, so now we're trying to fund it here." Or, "We've always done it like this."

For those in the substance abuse prevention field, SAMHSA* has outlined a new standard for assessing evidence and provides a web-based, decision-making resource that is an essential step in the planning process. The recently updated National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) site helps those in the field find interventions through an interactive searchable database. SAMHSA has moved from categorical ratings of programs, which prompted a "pick of the list" approach, to one that guides you toward choices that consider evidence related to the relevance and appropriateness of fit for your community, resources, and capacity. The approach to finding interventions is outcomes driven, and includes a selection process that leads to interventions that are culturally relevant and more likely to be sustained. Join CARS for an interactive and informative presentation, with time for questions and discussion on this expanded view of evidence and what works. www.samhsa.gov
