Welcome to KPFP.ORG's Newsletter, Issue #14
As I passed by Hanford West High School this morning, the neon flashing sign in front said "PROM" April 17th, 7-11 pm. My first thought was "fun" and then a little bit of anxiety crept up as I began thinking about the dangers of drinking and how Prom has been associated with teen binge drinking for years. Being the Prevention person that I am, I started thinking, how can we as a community keep them all safe?
April is designated Alcohol Awareness Month. The purpose is to raise awareness of the risks associated with alcohol use. Alcohol abuse can affect anyone – regardless of their age, sex, or nationality. Using alcohol increases the chances of someone being injured, engaging in sexual activity, being aggressive, and dying.
I ask everyone in the community to take a moment to talk to a youth about alcohol and its potential dangers, provide them with the information they need to make informed decisions about drinking.
The sting conducted recently by the Hanford Police Department was an excellent effort and very timely. Hats off to you all and to the Sentinel for placing it on the front page. Let's all make binge drinking, underage drinking and alcohol abuse a "front page" item in our concern and have a safe Prom, graduation and summer in Kings County.

New Film Airs Just in Time for Alcohol Awareness Month
Alcohol The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence and Hallmark Hall of Fame movies will debut the story of Alcoholics Anonymous founders Bill and Lois Wilson "When Love is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story" at 9 p.m. Eastern Sunday, April 25 on CBS television.
Golden Globe Award winner and two-time Academy Award nominee Winona Ryder and Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Barry Pepper star as Lois and Bill Wilson. The film documents the three-decades-long solid, but often troubled relationship of Lois Wilson (Ryder) co-founder of Al-Anon, and her alcoholic husband Bill Wilson (Pepper), co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous.
The World War 1 veteran returned home to a downward spiral of drinking, something that, at the time, was only controlled by his wife’s efforts. When Bill’s drinking cost him his job and his family’s lavish lifestyle, the couple founded support group Alcoholics Anonymous. After many years of Bill’s sobriety, Lois founded her own support group for herself and others like her. In 1951, Lois Wilson co-founded Al-Anon.
The movie, starring Winona Ryder and Barry Pepper, is airing as part of national Alcohol Awareness Month.

Keeping Kids Out of Trouble Not Easy
There's as much science as art to keeping kids out of trouble.
So believe a throng of researchers and California's gang czar Paul Seave, the Schwarzenegger appointee who heads the governor's Office of Gang and Youth Violence Policy.
"People have a hard time accepting that their cherished beliefs don't hold up," said the report's author Peter Greenwood, who heads a national organization called the Association for Advancement of Evidence Based Practice. Read more...
Anti-drug Education Methods Adapt to Times
"Educating children at every age is critical," says Susan Erwin Morgan, executive director of East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. ETCADA offers three programs for students — LifeSkills Training for elementary students, Youth Connection for middle school students and Project Toward No Drug Abuse, an intervention program for alternative school students and juvenile detention centers.
"It's all connected. We believe that drug abuse is often times a common thread in behaviors that harm our society. If we can prevent an addict from forming ... we can make communities healthier, strengthen families and improve quality of life for everyone," Morgan said. Read more...

Check out your city!
The American Lung Association's State of Tobacco Control Report shows that California is getting two failing tobacco grades, and many of our cities and counties are a long way from creating the smoke-free places we all want. It's time to raise the grade. Now is the time to make a difference at the state and local level and raise California's grades in tobacco control. With your help, a healthier California is possible.

"Mental Health Court"
Overview:
The Bureau of Justice Assistance, in coordination with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, administers the Mental Health Courts Program. This program funds projects that seek to mobilize communities to implement innovative, collaborative efforts that bring system wide improvements to the way the needs of adult offenders with mental disabilities or illnesses are addressed.
Mental health courts are a recent phenomenon and require collaboration and consideration from practitioners in both the criminal justice and mental health fields. Mental health courts typically involve judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and other court personnel who have expressed an interest in or possess particular mental health expertise. The courts generally deal with nonviolent offenders who have been diagnosed with a mental illness or co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders. Today, more than 150 of these courts exist, and more are being planned.
